The story of CPC: building a company on help

In 2018, CPC was working to rebuild its brand after 12 years in business. The founder was consolidating assets, cutting waste, and aligning himself with loyal employees. The last piece was to add some Business Development Managers to spur growth.
After a few months, two people were let go and revenue was left to Davy Crockett, a novice salesperson with zero knowledge of the power industry. Davy would call companies to learn as much as he could from conversations with the owner. They were able to find small pockets of success, but these were not consistent enough to make the company profitable.

A culture statement is born

The owner approached Davy with two options: The first was to close the doors and let the three remaining people go. The second was to give the company a small loan and see if Davy and the last remaining engineer, Stephen Henson, could build the company back. This included a buyout option for Davy if he could acquire the financing.
It was at this time that the first seeds of our current culture were planted. Driving across Southern Idaho after agreeing to run the company, Davy was listening to the book Start With Why, by Simon Sinek, and the desire to truly help people lingered in his mind for hours. At the core of this company is a deep-seated drive to answer the question, “How can we help?

One connection at a time

The first step was to hire an administrator. A chance reconnection led to hiring Keaton Olesen part-time. She jumped into the challenge of payroll, licensing, renewals, taxes, costing, compliance, and dozens of other requirements to clear the hurdles of running the business.
Davy would introduce himself to just about anyone, Stephen’s high capability could complete the work and Keaton would account for everything. We had one large project that needed completion by January 2020, but it was one that Stephen couldn’t complete alone, so we had to hire someone to join the slowly sinking ship.
There’s no reason Nick Nussbaumer should have joined CPC. He was a top field service engineer at a very stable MV equipment manufacturer. The pay would be worse, the benefits lousy, and the company may not even exist in six months. But with a clear understanding that we would work things out as a team, he was intrigued enough to come on board.

Figuring it out together

We burned through the last of the loan, just as the entire world came to a halt due to COVID. Our credit card bill was over $32,000, our account had $83, and our staff needed to get paid. Keaton contacted American Express for a 45-day extension, which allowed us to pay invoices and cover payroll, and the large job paid just weeks prior to the next credit card coming due.
As essential workers, our small staff flew empty planes to work at power generation facilities, surgery centers, schools, and Air Force bases. This most difficult of years built a solid foundation that we continue to stand on.

Answering the call

In 2021, we got an email asking for help. It was almost deleted since it came from one of the world’s largest companies and thus, looked fake. Davy responded and a call came in almost immediately. They needed safety services after a vendor left them in a tough spot. Excited to live our culture statement and prove ourselves, we agreed to four of six projects they offered.

We walked into the first million square foot building and knew we had our work cut out for us. Everyone was working difficult hours and travelling to sites around the country. Growth proved to be just as challenging as survival. The major benefit was adding four more people to our core; John, Cesar, Chris and Micaelynn.

Growth grounded in trust

With the additional people and work coming in from diverse entities, the transition of ownership finally happened in December 2022. The team worked together to craft the core values we live by every day, and define the vision that we’re always working towards: to protect people and inspire confidence.

Today, we continue creating a work environment where people choose to work the “CPC way,” and building a team that clients enjoy working with and trust on a deep level. We’ve been fortunate to add 18 more people to the team and, through their efforts, have added clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies, multiple data center clients, local and national general contractors, and electrical contractors and wholesalers.  We continue looking for clients and partners who want to work in a collaborative way.

Never underestimate a group of people who genuinely want to help and will figure it out at all costs.

Please tell us – how can we help?
